Where to Cross-Country Ski Near Denver
Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO is a quintessential Colorado ski location, as long as you can put up with the stuffy “ranch” atmosphere.
For Denver-area skiers, downhill tends to get all the glory—but Colorado also offers a stellar collection of cross-country ski trails, ranging from casual city laps to high-altitude wilderness tours. Be warned however, much like the alpine resorts, cross country trail access requires a bit of driving from Denver. Whether you’re looking for a quick spin before brunch in Boulder or a full weekend in the Rockies, Denver is within striking distance of some of the best Nordic skiing in the western U.S. Below, we cover five XC destinations that might fit whatever you’re looking to do: North Boulder Park, Eldora Nordic Center, Devil's Thumb Ranch, Snow Mountain Ranch, and Gold Run Nordic Center.
North Boulder Park

North Boulder Park is a bit of a unicorn: a groomed Nordic loop in town. When conditions align (usually after big storms), the Boulder Nordic Club grooms a small but functional trail system at this public park. The loop offers a rare opportunity to glide through a snowy meadow with views of the Flatirons just steps from coffee shops and bike paths.
It’s short, flat, and entirely dependent on natural snowfall—but when it’s on, it’s magic. Expect locals jogging with poles, kids on skis, and spandex-clad semi-pro cyclists falling over like little deer on ice. This is not a place to visit if you want an experience. It’s close and it’s free, that’s about all it has going for it.

Eldora Nordic Center
Location & Access: Nederland, CO (~50 miles northwest of Denver)

Just above Boulder in the sleepy mountain town of Nederland, Eldora offers a surprisingly robust and high-altitude Nordic center. With 40km of trails through lodgepole forests and open meadows, the system includes beginner-friendly loops, advanced climbs, and consistent grooming thanks to its 9,000'+ elevation.
It's a great day trip from Denver and far less chaotic than I-70 ski resorts. While the downhill side of Eldora can get busy, the Nordic center remains chill. If you time it right, you can ski loops on the Nordic side while your friends ride lifts.

Devil's Thumb Ranch

If you're after scenery, luxury, and some serious trail mileage, Devil's Thumb is your destination. With more than 120km of trails and immaculate daily grooming, it's considered one of the premier Nordic ski resorts in North America. Trails range from gentle meadow cruising to punishing backcountry-style climbs, all with stunning views of the Continental Divide.
It comes at a cost: day passes aren't cheap, and overnight stays even less so. But if you're treating yourself or introducing a friend to Nordic skiing in style, there's no better place. Bonus: the food and spa are worth writing home about.

Snow Mountain Ranch (YMCA of the Rockies)

Snow Mountain Ranch offers an ideal blend of family-friendly vibes and serious trail mileage. Operated by the YMCA of the Rockies, it has over 100km of groomed Nordic trails with options for all levels. The terrain is rolling and scenic, with trails through pine forests, wide valleys, and high meadows.
This is a great place for a ski weekend with kids or beginners. Bonus: snowshoeing, fat biking, tubing, and indoor rock climbing are available on site, making it a full-blown winter camp experience.

Gold Run Nordic Center (Frisco)

Located just outside of Breckenridge, Gold Run offers a well-maintained and slightly under-the-radar Nordic option in Summit County. The trail system weaves through the historic Gold Run Valley with gentle climbs, open fields, and views of the Tenmile Range.
It has a quieter, more relaxed vibe than the nearby Breckenridge Nordic Center and is great for casual touring or a sunny day trip. Trails are PistenBully-groomed and signage is excellent.

Final Thoughts
Denver may be best known for its alpine scene, but for Nordic skiers, it offers access to everything from in-town snowfields to elite mountain resorts.
For a low-key lap, hit North Boulder Park after a fresh dump. For dependable conditions and a good workout, Eldora delivers. And if you want the full Rocky Mountain experience, spend a weekend at Devil’s Thumb or Snow Mountain Ranch.
